‘Know Your Place’

Sound Design

Know Your Place is a fashion piece created by Ilja Schumm, with the purpose of making the wearer feel uncomfortable sensations. This project was all about creating a soundscape that made the viewer (and listener) feel uneasy—almost like they were experiencing the sensations tied to the fashion piece itself. The concept was to use sound not merely as a backdrop, but as an active element that draws the viewer/listener deeper into the experience, making them feel the weight, tension and discomfort in the piece.

The core of the challenge was identifying and combining sounds that would create a sonic environment that feels unsettling, yet purposeful. Each sound was chosen for how it would make the listener feel, as if they could physically sense the weight or the tension of the garment. The goal wasn’t just to add sound for the sake of it, but to really amplify the emotional impact of the visuals, making sure the sound and the fashion piece worked together to create that feeling of discomfort.

These sounds were layered and manipulated to reflect the sensations embodied by the fashion piece: a feeling of confinement, tension, and perhaps even a subtle aggression. The aim was to make the viewer/listener feel as though they were physically experiencing the emotions tied to the garment—its weight, its texture, its impact on the body. The result is a soundscape that feels intense and a bit off-kilter, reflecting the uneasy, almost aggressive emotions that come with the garment. It's all about bringing the sensations of the piece to life through sound.
